In the 1960’s, the French government had a vision and a mission: find the perfect mountainous region in which to build a series of ski resorts, all connected by the biggest lift system in the world. They flew all over the French Alps in helicopters to discover the optimum place to fulfill their goal. This slope is a tiny fraction of the 373 miles of trails. Glorious skiing for every level.
Courchevel, and Val Thorens. It is difficult to describe just how massive this resort is. It is the one of the largest ski complexs on the planet, with 373 miles of designated groomed trails and 183 lifts. You can alsmot fit all of the ski resort terrain of Colorado, California, and Utah INSIDE of Trois Vallees! Suffice it to say: you cannot ski this all in months. It is spectacular.

Morningstar has done four ski weeks in this region and has taken 300 skiers to this resort. Everyone came away awestruck at the immensity and diversity of terrain. All of the resorts are connected by ski trails, so you can explore a long way and visit several villages via skis.
The challenge of Trois Vallees skiing can be affordability. The biggest and some of the best skiing comes at a price. We found a good way to offer our skiers an affordable way to experience this region without the sticker shock. When France hosted the Olympics here years ago, they connected the small thermal spa village of Brides les Bain (pronounced breed le bon) to Meribel which is in the center of the ski region, via a 25 minute gondola ride. Our hotel, The Amelie, is a few minutes walk to the gondola station and a short gondola ride to the center of it all. Located along a rushing river in the middle of a thermal spa village, The Amelie was wonderful on our previous visits. It was a very nice three star hotel then and it has recently been remodeled and updated further. It is within walking distance of the thermal spa complex and a large casino in town. The food was excellent and we liked everything about this property. It offers very nice accommodations in an expensive ski resort and is still only a short gondi ride to the skiing action.
In short, Trois Vallees has it all when it comes to skiing. Every serious rider should experience this resort at least once in their lives. For Skiman this will be week 5. He cannot wait to go back. He’s only scratched the surface of this ski behemoth.

Guided groups: For experts the backcountry off-trail skiing in the Alps is spectacular and it is why we have been returning for decades. We always offer guided expert groups to access this terrain safely. We are also offering the same guided experience for intermediate and expert skiers who want to explore the trails and get some skiing pointers along the way. Led by local guides, these guided days are pricey for one or two skiers, but by have groups of 7 to divide the cost, it is very affordable. If you are an expert skier, you really must do this with us! Below are some comments from some of our friends who joined us in 2024 on our backcountry days in Switzerland and Italy.

are joining one of our expert guided groups or intermeiate guided groups, you save a huge
amount. A guide costs $500 a day. On your own or with a friend, that makes for a pricey
day. With us is the guide cost is divided by up to 8 skiers and is therefore afforable.

For intermediate skiers: As with our first ski week to Portes du Soleil, you will be skiing in a massive, interconnected, resort. It will certainly double your fun to spend a day or two with a local guide to show you around. All skiing will be on groomed runs and you will not only have a guide, but you will have an instructor for the day. There is extra cost for this, but it is highly recommended and worth it.

For experts: Trois Vallees is the epitome of off-trail backcountry skiing. Vast, varied, terrain offers unlimited possibilities. To do it safely, you must have a guide, and one of Skiman’s all-time-favorites is going to be our lead guide for the fourth time. Phillipe is a local guide who knows every inch of the ski region. He will take us to the best and he will keep us safe as we go. Phillipe is so funny and so French! It is an experience to ski with him, to be sure. And, he is the only guide who invited our guided group to his home for dinner with his wife! Like we said: Phillipe is a gem!
Some of our backcountry skiers 5 years ago
He is a great joy to ski with and Skiman holds him in high esteem. If you are an expert, you must do the guided skiing. It is the reason Skiman goes back to Europe every year. The back country skiing afforded in the Alps is just not available in the U.S. It has reinvented Skiman’s definition of skiing. I have learned more about skiing from these European alpine guides than from any other source. It is an honor to ski with them. Phillipe is one of the best of this breed and we can’t wait to see and ski with our old friend again.
er regretted it! But if that is not possible, here are some factors to help you decide between on or the other week.
Advantages of Trois Vallees ski week:
-The skiing region is really well connected and the skiing flows between areas.
– Most of the skiing is higher elevation and this can result in better snow quality. But, of course, you never know.
– For experts, Trois Vallees offers a bit more expert terrain than does Portes du Soleil. But both areas are great for off-trail.
-Trois Vallees does have more skiers, but they also have a bigger lift system than the Portes du Soliel. In any case, lift lines are not a problem at either resort.
Food for thought. Hope this section is helpful in your decision-making process. Of course, email or call with any other questions you have that will help you decide. We know both resorts well and can probably answer your questions.

Doing both ski weeks: We have many of our skier friends that want to save money and stay for both ski weeks. If you have the resources and the time, this is a great idea. You have to pay to fly over to Europe and back, so the longer you stay, the more value you are getting out of your ticket.
What you must do to join us on this ski week:
